Power harassment from various perspectives- Power Harassment Human resource department point of view
I am working in human resource department of company in Tokyo. We are handling all tasks related to people of the company.
One day, I received an email from one of the member in the new project which has started recently. The project was known for its importance, and the leader of the team were known as key person of the company. Because of that, I was very surprised because the content of the mail was about power harassment by leader. I first couldn't believe it, but I was forced to after he sent me multiple evidence to prove power harassment, and we had to deal with it.
I first called employee and conducted interview on face to face about it. I was shocked about serious power harassment he had received, and he said that he doesn't want to work with him anymore.
Then, I called the leader to ask about it. He first didn't admitted it, but after showing several evidence, he finally said he might have committed a power harassment.
After the investigation, we had to determine a treatment for leader. After several conversations, he was removed from the team leader position, and demoted to different department. His career was going well, but completely ruined after one huge mistake he made.
The Yomiuri Shinbun. (2022, October 2). Should I accuse my supervisors of power harassment? The Japan News. https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/features/troubleshooter/20221002-61331/
This story shows how serious power harassment is and how important it is for HR to act carefully. It must have been difficult to hear the employee’s complaint and see the proof. It is good that you interviewed both sides before making a decision. Even though the leader’s career was ruined, it is important to protect workers from harmful behavior. This case reminds us that no matter how important someone is in the company, everyone should be treated with respect and fairness. Taking proper steps can help create a safer workplace for all.
